What Choreby does

Quests

Chores become a quest log

Same dishes, different frame. Tap done, the bar fills, the sound hits.

Monster

A monster that needs them daily

Hatch it, name it, keep it healthy. Skip too many days and it starts to slip — it never dies.

Rewards

Prizes you invent, including cash

Screen time, movie night, twenty dollars. You write the list and set the price.

Gems

Gems, XP, levels and streaks

Earned by working, never bought. Progress they can see stacking up.

Family Hub

Approve from your own phone

Your phone becomes the Family Hub. Add quests and approve work from anywhere.

Room

A room they decorate themselves

Earn furniture, art and paint. Their space, arranged their way — the reason they open it unprompted.

How it works

Ten minutes to set up. Then it runs itself.

After setup your only job is tapping approve.

  1. Step 01Parent Zone → Tasks

    You set the quests

Dishes, teeth, homework, trash. Set what each one pays in gems, how often it repeats, and whether it needs your approval before it counts.

  2. Step 02Quests tab

    They clear the board

Your kid opens the app and sees a quest log, not a chore chart. Tap done, the bar fills, the sound hits, the monster perks up.

  3. Step 03Gems + XP

    Gems land in the wallet

Approved work pays out. The balance sits on screen right next to the thing they are saving for and cannot afford yet. That gap is the whole point.

  4. Step 04Shop → Prizes

They cash out on your terms

Screen time at 50. Movie night at 80. Twenty real dollars at 265. You write the menu and set every price.

The exchange rate is yours

You set every price

Nothing is priced in real money by default and kids cannot buy gems. The only way in is doing the work.

Inside the app

It looks like a game because that is the point.

A chore chart your kid avoids is worth nothing.

Characters

Six monsters, born from chores.

Every one is hatched from an egg, named by your kid, and raised by real work around the house.

The monster

Everybody starts with an egg.

Pick one, hatch it, name it. From then on something is depending on them daily, whether or not they feel like it.

Choose your egg

Whichever they pick is theirs to raise.

Step 2

Then you look after it

The Choreby monster screen: feed, pet, play with and bathe your monster

Four ways to look after them, every day. The monster reacts to each one, and its health tracks whether anybody actually showed up.

Step 3

You decide how real it gets

Neglect it and it gets sick. It never dies.

That is the whole lesson a real pet teaches, minus the part where a real animal pays for a bad week. Care brings it back, so effort visibly undoes neglect.

Magical

Never gets sick. It just goes very sleepy when quests get skipped, and perks straight back up. Soft enough for a five-year-old.

Life-like

Real neglect makes it genuinely unwell — drooping, miserable, health bar sliding. One finished quest starts it recovering. It still never dies.

You set the mode in the Parent Zone and can change it any time.

Rewards

You write the prize list. Even if the prize is cash.

Choreby ships with no opinion about what a chore is worth. You add the rewards, you set the gem price, and you change both whenever you want.

The science

Every mechanic came from a real study.

Most chore apps wave at “dopamine” and move on. Here is the actual research, including the parts where the popular version is wrong.

Delayed gratification

900+

kids in the replication

Kids wait longer when the wait is built for them

The marshmallow test got oversold, and a bigger replication shrank the effect once family background was counted. What held up is that children hold out far longer when the situation is designed to help them.

In the app

Gems sit on screen next to a reward they picked and cannot afford yet.

Watts, Duncan & Quan (2018), Psychological Science
Responsibility

Age 3

when it mattered most

Chores at three predicted how they turned out at twenty-five

Rossmann followed 84 people from age three into their mid-twenties, and helping around the house early was the strongest childhood predictor of adult outcomes. Small sample, so take it as a strong hint rather than a law.

In the app

Quests are grouped the way a house runs: Chores, Hygiene, Brain.

Rossmann (2002), University of Minnesota
Reward systems

128

experiments reviewed

Rewards spoil fun tasks. Chores were never the fun part

128 experiments show that paying someone for something they already enjoy kills the enjoyment. That effect needs enjoyment to destroy, and no child is born loving the dishes.

In the app

You set what gems buy and what things cost, then raise prices as habits stick.

Deci, Koestner & Ryan (1999), Psychological Bulletin
Consequences

Both

earning and losing, together

A consequence you can actually feel, with nothing real at stake

Systems where something is lost through neglect work, and they work best sitting next to something being earned rather than replacing it. Choreby runs both: gems are earned by doing, and the pet is what slips when nobody shows up.

In the app

Skip your quests and the pet's health drops. Care brings it back. You set how far it can fall.

Jowett Hirst, Dozier & Payne (2016), Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis
Playing a character

180

children tested

Kids stick with boring work longer as somebody else

180 children got a dull ten-minute task with a tablet game sitting right there as temptation. The ones playing a character lasted longest; the ones being themselves quit soonest.

In the app

Your kid picks an avatar and levels a hero. Trash duty is something the hero does.

White, Kross, Duckworth & Carlson (2017), Child Development
Habits

66

median days to automatic

Sixty-six days, and one missed day costs almost nothing

Twenty-one days is a myth. The real median was 66 days with people landing anywhere from 18 to 254, and skipping a single day barely dented anyone's progress.

In the app

Streaks reward showing up without punishing a missed Tuesday.

Lally et al. (2010), European Journal of Social Psychology
Why it feels good

1 of 3

basic needs: competence

The checkmark is the first reward

Feeling capable is a basic psychological need, not a nice-to-have. Finishing something you were working toward lands before any prize does.

In the app

Progress bars, a Today's Quest meter, and a pet that reacts the moment work is done.

Ryan & Deci (2000), American Psychologist
Chore tips

Your kid gets the science too.

The star drops a Chore Tip into the quest screen: short, plain-language explanations of why finishing things feels good. Kids who understand the mechanism stop thinking of chores as punishment.

Where we draw the line

Choreby is not a clinical intervention and no app raises your kid. These are real studies with real limits, described the way the researchers described them rather than the way the headlines did. Every citation links out so you can check us.

Built for families first

Kids never have accounts

There is no login for a child, ever. Family Sync uses one parent account, and only you control it.

Syncing is your choice

Leave it off and nothing leaves your device. Turn it on and your family's game data syncs so approvals reach your phone.

No ads, nothing sold

No ad network, no third-party trackers, and we never sell data. We ask for no photos, birthdays or location.

Kids cannot spend money

Gems are earned, never bought. Every monster, room item and badge is free. The only purchase is the parent subscription.

Questions

The things parents ask first.

What ages is Choreby for?

Five to fifteen. Younger kids come for the monster and the confetti. Older kids come for the gems and the payout. Same app, different reasons, and you can run both at once in one household.

What do I actually get for free?

The whole game, on one device, for one player, forever. Quests, gems, XP, streaks, your monster with both care modes, every room item, the reward shop, the Parent Zone and approvals. What a plan buys is seats and syncing: more kids, parent players, and Family Sync so your own phone can approve work.

Does it need an account?

Not to play. Choreby runs fully on one device with no sign-up at all. If you want the family version — approving quests from your own phone, or running a kid's phone and the family iPad in step — you create one parent account with an email address, and that links your devices. Kids never have accounts.

What is Family Sync?

It keeps every device in your household on the same page. Your kid marks the dishes done on their phone, it appears on your phone for approval, and the gems land the moment you tap approve. Quests, gems, streaks and the monster all stay in step. You turn it on, and you can turn it off.

Can I pay my kid real money through this?

You can set a reward to any cash amount you like, price it in gems, and hand over the money yourself when they cash it in. Choreby does not move money and takes no cut. It is a scoreboard, not a bank.

What is the monster actually for?

It is the reason a seven-year-old opens the app without being told. They hatch it from an egg, name it, feed it, play with it and bathe it, and it reacts to them. That daily pull is what carries the habit through the boring weeks.

Can the monster die? Is that going to upset my kid?

No. Monsters in Choreby never die, in either care mode. There are two modes. In Magical mode the monster stays healthy no matter what — that is the right setting for younger kids. In Life-like mode neglect makes it genuinely unwell: it droops, it looks miserable, and the health bar drops. It still never dies, and one finished quest starts it recovering. You pick the mode in the Parent Zone and can change it whenever, so start soft and raise the stakes when they are ready.

Why would I turn on Life-like mode?

Because for an older kid, a consequence that never lands stops being a consequence. A twelve-year-old works out fairly fast that nothing really happens, and the lesson goes with it. Life-like mode lets neglect actually show — a sad, sick monster they have to nurse back — without ever handing a child a dead pet. If that is not your kid yet, leave it on Magical.

Can my kid cheat and mark everything done?

Only if you let them. Any task can be flagged Needs Approval, which holds the payout until you tap approve. Use it on the chores that matter and skip it on the easy ones.

What happens when the trial ends?

You keep everything. Your first player keeps playing on that device, free, forever. The family features — extra kids, parent players, and syncing to your phone — pause until you pick a plan. Nothing is deleted and no progress is lost.

I started on Solo and another kid wants in. Now what?

Add the second kid and Choreby offers the Family upgrade. Apple pro-rates whatever is left on your Solo term, so you never pay twice.

Is my kid's data safe?

Kids never have accounts. With Family Sync off, nothing leaves your device at all. With it on, your family's game data is stored under your parent account so the devices stay in step. We never ask for photos, birthdays or location, we show no ads, and we run no third-party trackers. Use nicknames instead of real names if you prefer. The privacy policy has the full detail.

Never worry about chores, hygiene, or homework again.

Ten minutes of setup, two weeks free, and a kid who checks the app before you have to say anything.
